I remember the first time my husband and I wandered into the Evening Muse. There were 3 acts performing that evening, I’m sorry I can’t remember the names. But I will never forget the 3 things that struck me that night.
-
How affordable it was to get in and see live music
-
How easy it was to see and hear and simply have an intimate experience with the music
-
How fantastic and varied the music was. I remember one of the performers being a female soloist. There were 2 guys and 2 guitars and the final group was a 5 piece band. How’s that for variety?
Whenever I profile a small business it tends to be a place I frequent like my favorite coffee spot, or a shop where I often find cool things for a stage. But I grow more impressed every year with the number of talented musicians in Charlotte and the vibrant music scene around town that I thought you should know about it. The Evening Muse truly makes listening to music very easy, very accessible and very entertaining.
Located at North Davidson and East 36th streets, the Evening Muse opened in 2001. Over the last several years, other popular music spots like Tremont Music Hall, The Double Door Inn, and Amos’ Southend have closed sadly but the Evening Muse continues to feature an eclectic array of bands from funk-rock to indie pop and singer-songwriters. There’s no sign of that changing anytime soon. It packs quite a crowd consistently into the small, dark, artistically charming space.
Don’t take my word for the level of talent or the level of cool at this place. Check out these reviews.
You don’t have to be a full-time professional musician to get a chance in the spotlight. Monday nights at 8 p.m., The Evening Muse hosts Find Your Muse. The open mic night is considered one of the best in town. Doors open at 7 p.m.
The cover is just $3, for both performers and listeners. The supportive crowd makes for a fun experiment.
Need another reason to try it? NODA, where the Evening Muse is located, is a super cool neighborhood for many reasons. Here are a few more places to explore while you are nearby.
The Evening Muse posts its upcoming acts on its Facebook page Or you can take a page from my husband and I’s playbook. From that very first night at the Evening Muse, we make it a point to NOT know who is performing at the Evening Muse. We just wander in and are ALWAYS pleasantly surprised by the musicianship. I hope you are too!
