Summer is winding down with the final bursts of sun-soaked fun. There are a few weeks in August when the temperature gauge clearly shows it’s still summer but the luster of the community pool has melted away and summer camps have wrapped up their theme based activities and sent all the kiddos home. So what’s a parent to do with several weeks left before the buses come back? We have a few fun and relatively cheap ideas to help you out!
White Water Center Fun
There’s nothing I don’t love about the National White Water Center and live music! You still have time to experience River Jam every Thursday, Friday and Saturday in August. This one-of-a-kind outdoor venue in the middle of the world’s largest man-made whitewater river features all kinds of genres including roots rock, Americana, bluegrass, folk, and funk. Take the kids, or don’t, have a beer and chill a bit. It doesn’t cost anything for the concert but you will have to pay $6-$18 for parking.
Topgolf
Here’s one mom and dad will like as much as the kids. If you don’t consider golf a kid-friendly game, then you’ve never been to Topgolf. It’s typically not a cheap outing for families but on Tuesdays in August it’s half priced! Score! It’s a good time whether you are a beginner or a wanna-be pro. And what makes this the perfect summer outing is that you play from climate controlled bays! Let mom sit down for this outing – she’s been running around after your family all summer- and let a server bring HER the food.
Topgolf has two Charlotte locations:
- 8024 Savoy Corporate Dr.
- 9110 Drivers Way, Charlotte.
In the mood for a movie
Too hot? Go see a movie for a few bucks. I know you’ve spent a ton of money already this summer doing all the things for your kids. Those summer camps probably had you forking over a few Benjamin’s (hundred dollar bills)! But here’s the good news, lots of area neighborhoods and communities have reduced movies during the off hours and weekdays. That means you don’t have to wait til the weekend for the kids to be quiet. Here’s a list of cheap movie options Charlotte on the Cheap put together for you!
Get artsy
I’m a sucker for a good event that’s based around art. Specifically, local art. Party in the Park checks all the boxes.
The event at Mint Museum on Randolph includes food trucks, live music from the Mike Strauss Band, and a cash bar on the front terrace (weather permitting). It’s August from 1pm -5pm and the best part is, IT’S FREE. You can also discover and learn about the work of remarkable American artists on view at the Mint in honor of National American Artist Appreciation Month.
