A few days ago I wrote a post for Stella Home about my time in service and how to show support for Veterans on Veterans Day. I’ve gotten a really great response from the tips and since it’s Veterans Day today, I thought I’d share!

Did you know I am also a veteran?
I actually served in the US Coast Guard for eleven years. Lieutenant Cunningham at your service. I have always searched for a way to be a force for good and for awhile that translated to working Search and rescue.
I am very proud of my service and the people I served alongside. I know first-hand the sacrifices men and women make when they commit their life to military service.
I love living in a city that honors its Veteran’s. There are so many ways to honor a vet this Veteran’s Day and most of them don’t cost you a penny.
SAY THANKS! A simple gesture is all it takes. Give a vet a hug. Shake their hand. Buy them a cup of coffee(or a beer). A little thanks goes a long way.
TEACH YOUR CHILDREN the importance of respecting and remembering our men and women in uniform. Make sure they know who the Veterans are within their own family and explain to them how they served. A great way to teach them is to take them to Thompson Park to see the Charlotte Vietnam memorial wall.
The 270 foot-long Memorial is now accessible from the Sugar Creek Greenway in uptown Charlotte. You can bike or walk along the water, enjoy the sights and visit the tribute to the 105 Mecklenburg Count veterans who died in Vietnam.
ATTEND A VETERAN’S DAY EVENT: Central Piedmont Community College holds its Annual Veterans Day Event Friday, November 10th from 11am-1pm. The Center for Military Families host’s the celebration honoring our current and past military. All are welcome to attend the patriotic presentation and visit the wall of gratitude to show support our service men and women. The event is FREE and parking is available in the Employee/Theater Parking Deck, accessible from East 4th Street.
SHOW YOUR PRIDE: Hang a flag in your yard as a symbol of your appreciation. Be careful when you are putting it up—the flag should never touch the ground.
VOTE: I attended the American Airline’s Veteran’s Breakfast this year and one of our Vet’s mentioned the best way to honor a vet is to vote! I couldn’t agree more. Besides, if you don’t vote you can’t complain and come on.. everyone loves to complain about politics!

This year Veteran’s Day (November 11th) falls on a Saturday so most places are observing the holiday on Friday the 10th. If you ask me, every day is a day worth honoring our country’s veterans.
