Fun in the Great Outdoors – Charlotte Parks and Greenways

Fun in the Great Outdoors – Charlotte Parks and Greenways
April 4, 2013 Cassee Cunningham

Parks are prevalent in the Charlotte area.  In fact, Mecklenburg County boasts 210 parks and facilities located on more than 17,600 acres of parkland!

The parks in the Mecklenburg County parks system include dog parks, skate parks and more!  Many of these even parks offer programs for all ages – from preschoolers to senior citizens and families!

No matter what area of town you are in, there’s a park nearby!  For proof, check out CharMeck’s parks map.  Surprisingly enough, some of my favorite parks are located right around the uptown area – Freedom Park on East Blvd, Latta Park on East Park Ave, Third Ward and Fourth Ward Parks on 4th St and Poplar St, respectively.  We’ve even got Romare Bearden Park coming to Church Street this summer, which will offer fitness and cultural programs year-round!

Then there are the greenways!  The Mecklenburg County greenway system is fast becoming one of the top in the nation. Greenways, by definition, are vegetated natural buffers that improve water quality, reduce flooding, and provide wildlife habitat. Greenway trails benefit everyone by providing free recreation, transportation and fitness alternatives. There are currently 37 miles of developed and 150 miles of undeveloped greenways in the Mecklenburg system.

So as spring truly comes to Charlotte, get out and experience these areas for yourself!  You’re sure to find the perfect spot for you!
