Elizabeth – A Neighborhood Steeped in History

Elizabeth – A Neighborhood Steeped in History
November 15, 2012 Cassee Cunningham

Established in 1907, the Elizabeth community is a beautiful, diverse and engaging historic neighborhood.

The community takes its name from Elizabeth College, which in turn was named after Anne Elizabeth Watts, whose son-in-law started the school.  This was a small Lutheran women’s college founded in 1897 on what is today the site of Presbyterian Hospital. Elizabeth began to thrive around 1902, and was then annexed in 1907.

Home of Independence Park, the first public park in the city, Elizabeth became one of the most fashionable residential areas in Charlotte in its early days.

Much of Elizabeth was built and developed in the early 20th century.  As such, the neighborhood’s trees have had time to grow and mature. They now form a canopy over most of the area’s streets. In addition, Elizabeth is one of Charlotte’s more pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods; businesses and residences are close to each other, and most of the area has sidewalks. The Walk Score of Elizabeth is 72, one of the highest in Charlotte.

Elizabeth has proven itself to be the perfect home for Savvy & Co Real Estate.  Check out our listings in and around Elizabeth and chances are you’ll find the perfect home for you!
