Changes in Uptown Charlotte on 5th Street

Changes in Uptown Charlotte on 5th Street
February 26, 2015 Cassee Cunningham

uptown charlotte mural at the local - cassie cunninghamOver the last few weeks, lots of changes have come to the corner of 5th and Tryon. Have you noticed?

First, Phil’s Tavern is gone. The long-time Uptown Charlotte establishment (open for 20 years) is being replaced soon with The Local. It’s said that The Local will have an LA dive bar type of vibe.

Second, and probably the most noticeable, is the gigantic mural going up! Created by self-taught local artists Matt Hooker and Matt Moore, the piece will depict Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg detonating a crown that explodes into a rainbow of widely-recognized images of the city.

The mural is created solely from spray paint (save a base layer of house paint), and it is part of a growing movement in Charlotte to highlight the city’s art scene through works of public art. If you enjoy the mural outside, you’ll definitely want to visit The Local – another piece is going up inside the new venue for patrons to enjoy.

Want to live within walking distance of this great new mural and The Local? Give me a shout! We can explore Uptown Charlotte’s options for living arrangements together!
