In a recent article, Global Trade Magazine published its list of Top 50 Cities in America for global trade. Of the list, Global Trade Magazine says: “Our special report on the Top 50 Cities for Global Trade is really two rankings in one. The overall ranking lists the 50 largest metropolitan areas by export volume. Lest that seem a tad stiff, we offer a second set of superlative rankings selected by the editors at Global Trade. These appear in the same order of their export contributions, but have a special call-out for their designated superlative.”
And the great news? The Charlotte metro area (Charlotte/Gastonia/Rock Hill) came in at #43 overall AND garnered the “Most Entrepreneurial” superlative!
To gain this position on the list, Charlotte brought in $5.4 billion in export volume. Canada, Mexico, and China were the main countries to which our exports went; Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Chemicals were the main industries. Over the past decade, 800+ new firms established themselves in the Charlotte area in each of three separate years. Between 2002 and 2011, nearly 7,000 new firms came to the Charlotte area, and more than 57,000 jobs were created in the region.
Backing the Most Entrepreneurial superlative is the great support for entrepreneurs in the area. The McColl School of Business Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, CPCC Institute for Entrepreneurship and the Small Business & Technology Development Center each offer a range of programs aimed at helping new start-ups and the next generation of business leaders. Assistance is also available for opening foreign markets through the great organizations focused on these issues in the area.
