burger joints in charlotteThere’s nothing better in the summer than a good burger.  But 90-degree days with 100% humidity can cause even the most avid griller to want to stay inside.  So when you need a burger without a hassle, where should you head to in Charlotte?

A simple Google search for “Charlotte Burgers” shows that  Charlotte burger joints range from time-honored staples to up-and-coming spots.  Here are a few of my faves:

Kickstand Charlotte Burgers-n-Bar is one of the newer kids on the block, but still worth a visit to their Plaza Midwood location.  Their beef burgers are made of certified humane-raised beef from vegetarian fed cattle that are steroid-, hormone- and antibiotic-free.  Their non-beef choices include a turkey burger, a veggie burger and a shrimp burger.

The Penguin Drive-In, voted Most Iconic Restaurant in Charlotte, is a mainstay in Charlotte’s burger world.  Also located in Plaza Midwood, they have been featured on Man vs Food on The Travel Channel, as well as Diners, Drive-ins & Dives on Food Network.

Almost right next door to The Penguin is The Diamond.  Another Plaza Midwood staple, their burgers are listed under Neighborhood Classics on the menu for a reason.  You can choose from one, two or three ⅓-lb patties on your burger, or a black bean veggie burger, and have it topped with your choice of toppings, just like the classic diner The Diamond is!

If you’re looking for Charlotte’s original Mom & Pop Shop, Mr K’s Soft Ice Cream has been in SouthEnd since its opening in 1967.  Their burger menu offers not just hamburgers and cheeseburgers, but ¼-lb, ⅓-lb and garden burger options.  And all are made to order based on the toppings you like!

Zack’s Hamburgers is another SouthEnd Charlotte burger staple.  Online reviews include phrases like “one of the best spots to get a burger in Charlotte” and “[t]his place is heaven”.

Last but certainly not least, Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar has two great locations – one in Dilworth on East Boulevard and one in Ballantyne.  Bad Daddy’s has a burger for everyone, from beef to turkey to black bean to shrimp.  And the topping combinations they have on the menu are beyond compare!
